I spent some time during Christmas in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. What will you see and how do the Lithuanians decorate for Christmas?
The snow was thick when I arrived in Vilnius a chilly morning. As always in Eastern Europe, effective driving is preferred, and the seven kilometers into the city center were driven in under 10 minutes in moderate traffic.
Once into the city center the cold weather continued but was soon forgotten when the gentle smell of Gluehwein arrived. There is a cozy Christmas market taking place in the Cathedral Square. A sea of lights make the grey day shine and bringing the Christmas atmosphere to real life.
What more have a great Christmas feeling in Vilnius this time of the year? I heading towards the old town, which is one of the biggest in Europe. Here there no shortage of Christmas tree’s and decorations. See the gallery below.
